Why does frost arrive earlier up here than lakeside?
Coeur d'Alene's average first fall frost lands around October 12 (Old Farmer's Almanac, NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Hayden's bench ground is colder and drains faster than the lakeside, so fall clean-up, aeration and winterization windows close a little earlier up here. When we plan your fall work, we aim it ahead of the valley dates, not on them.
Do new builds here need sod more than seed?
Often, yes. A lot of Hayden lots are fresh cuts and fills — the bench ground gets scraped flat for new construction, and seed on bare, compacted subsoil fights erosion all summer.
